Description

One of our nation’s greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln, started out as an absent-minded frontier lawyer who had to store his important papers in his hat! This delightful fact is just the beginning of the popular read-aloud, “Abe Lincoln’s Hat,” by Martha Brenner. Other facts from Lincoln’s life are retold in the story with delightful illustrations, and then—surprise---actual photographs reinforce the fact that this is a work of non-fiction.

What a great resource for teaching the Common Core State Standards for Informational Text, RI 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8! Our text-dependent questions help you teach close reading as you guide students back into the text to find answers to the questions. Enhance your lesson with our Close Reading study sheet. Students can then use the completed study sheet to write either an informational or an opinion paragraph using our paragraph scaffold and final copy page. Sample paragraphs are included for teacher reference, and may be used as handwriting practice pages or even as alternate assignment pages for students who need modified work.
