    Back to School

    • Editable Small Group Discussion Cards: A Google Slides resource with 52 get-to-know-you icebreaker prompt cards for small group discussion activity (color or black and white options available)
    • Back to School Speed Philosophical Chairs: an activity to introduce your students to public speaking and dialogue! Students will not only learn what speed philosophical chairs is but they will enjoy some exciting dialogue through 20 back-to-school-themed debate topics.
    • Partner Interview Form: This exercise has students finding out about each other and then introducing the person they interviewed to the entire class or to smaller groups.
    • Entrance Cards: Students pair up using the entrance cards and then answer the questions listed on the card with their partner. Each set of partners introduces each other to the class using the entrance cards.

    Halloween

    • Speed Philosophical Chairs: Students will not only learn what speed philosophical chairs is but they will enjoy some exciting dialogue through 20 spooky debate topics.

    • The Landlady: Using Text Evidence with Discussion Group Cards- Help your students practice using text evidence with these editable discussion cards and talking chips for The Landlady by Roald Dahl! This activity is sure to get your middle school students in the Halloween spirit.
    • Connect the Dots: A player picks two cards out of the Halloween-themed 200-card deck and then must immediately begin telling a story connecting both words together convincingly. The story should only be 1-2 minutes, complicated, or true!
    • Build a Costa Monster: This 18 interactive Google Slides presentation first goes over Costa's level of thinking with details and examples for all 3 levels. Then students will follow directions on drawing or creating their own Costa monster while answering leveled questions on the way. After students create their monsters and answer the Costa questions about them, they will write their own questions based on a Halloween scene!

    Thanksgiving

    • Turkey in Disguise Career Research Project: Students will cut out a turkey template or use the digital template and get crafty to disguise their turkey in a career they are interested in researching. Students will answer the 14 career research questions. Then they use the writing paper provided to write a story naming their turkey and describing a day in the life of his/her career as he/she hides from hungry fans.
    • Thanksgiving Speed Philosophical Chairs: Students will not only learn what speed philosophical chairs is but they will enjoy some exciting dialogue through 20 engaging and silly debate topics.

    Christmas

    • Christmas Speed Philosophical Chairs: Students will not only learn what speed philosophical chairs is but they will enjoy some exciting dialogue through 20 engaging and silly debate topics. For example, "Santa is a threat to National Security."
    • Christmas Ornament Mandala and My Greatest Gift Writing Activity: Students will choose 1 of the 8 mandala ornaments to decorate or create their own with the blank version provided. Then they will write about their greatest gift, cut and glue that to their ornament!
    • Reindeer in Disguise College Research Project: This how-to disguise a Reindeer hands-on, interactive project is the perfect engaging twist on your college research projects! You can print or use the digital template and allow students to copy and paste images to disguise their reindeer in college gear! This resource includes college research questions and a writing assignment.

    Winter

    • Build a Costa Snowman: This 18 interactive Google Slides presentation first goes over Costa's level of thinking with details and examples for all 3 levels. Then students will follow directions on drawing or creating their own Costa snowman while answering leveled questions on the way. After students create their snowmen and answer the Costa questions about them, they will write their own questions based on a winter scene!
    • Bottle Flip: This activity allows students to talk and share their winter break experiences in a fun and interactive way. Students will take turns trying to gain points by flipping a bottle upright! When they miss, they have to answer a question and lose a chance at points.
    • After Winter Break Write the Room: This activity features 11 unique labels you can display around your room, each representing a letter to spell out "Winter Break." These labels come with thought-provoking prompts that encourage students to reflect on their winter break experiences.

    New Year's

    • Editable Costa's Level of Thinking Question Spring Scenes: Review Costa’s Level of Thinking by having students take notes over the teaching slides provided. Then students apply their learning by creating their own leveled questions over the provided spring-themed scenes. Revisit and discuss the essential questions at the end!
