AUTISM SOCIAL STORY: APPROPRIATE TOUCH CUSTOMIZED: HANDS TO SELF FOR BOYS
- PDF
Description
This version was CUSTOMIZED FOR BOYS as requested by a PARENT for a particular situation AT HOME AND COMMUNITY VS SCHOOL SETTING, where they wanted to guide the teenage boy to know that appropriate touch means hands to himself. The social story guides him to learn to stop touching himself and others, while also teaching him various ways of properly touching others such as giving high-five and the places in public where hands should be kept to himself. This version teaches and guides the teenage boy to understand what he is going through, but also learn to keep hands to himself.

Over the past 20 years of providing speech and language therapy services in the public schools, at least once per year I have at least one student diagnosed with ASD who needs visual support/social stories to help him/her understand what is appropriate vs inappropriate touch. When I have utilized this tool, students improve awareness, and reduce unwanted behaviors
This topic is hard enough for any typical teenager and not alone our students with ASD. When I first developed this tool, I read many research articles and listened to what the parents of many of my students had to say, so I was very careful and tactful on the visuals I would present.
