ASL Religious Signs & Biblical Concepts R – W

In this download, we’ll focus on religious signs and biblical concepts, R – Q. These products hold a special place in my heart because the first signs I observed were at church! I began learning sign language in 1985 and have been in and around ASL and the Deaf Community ever since, first as a student, then pastor of a Deaf church, a freelance ASL Interpreter, and then as a teacher and curriculum writer.

This product is ASL vocabulary related to Religion and Biblical Concepts with several contextual clues and scripture references. GIFs included.

Signs used in religious context often vary in different churches. This is perfectly acceptable, and it is important for the signer to know and to use those signs that are familiar, accepted and understood by them.

It should be noted that certain religious signs have theological implications associated with particular churches. An example is the word baptize, in which the choice of sign itself indicates whether immersion or sprinkling is meant (Lottie L. Riekehof, The Joy of Signing, 1983)

Many of the signs you’ll observe were handed down from the Deaf church I pastored. The signs demonstrated are not meant to be exhaustive, nor perfected. Words with an asterisk are used in a religious setting but do not have specific signs, suggestions are made for substitutions or combinations of standard signs.
