Description

This activity will lead middle school students through constructing triangles and rectangles that are related to each other to determine a method for finding the area of a triangle.

There are three parts of the investigation:

• Finding the area of triangles where there is one horizontal and one vertical side

• Finding the area of triangles where there is one horizontal or one vertical side

• Finding the area of triangles of general triangles.

The investigation ends with the students summarizing what they have discovered.

Geoboards are included in the activity if you do not have any geoboards.

  • I love using hands on lessons with my middle schoolers, and they love it as well.

  • Great Resource - thank you!
  • Great for a hands on activity
  • While this was challenging for my ELL fifth graders to work through alone, it was a perfect way to help me explain how to find the area of triangles using a tool they know--the geoboard! They wanted to know how to do this after our discussion of areas of rectangles, squares, so I used this whole class. Great job on this...I'm sure your middle school students love this.
