Free response questions make up 90 minutes of the AP Biology exam. Set your students up for success with this FRQ Tips handout. Then, plan out an entire year of FRQ practice using a thorough Teacher Planning Guide which outlines the major topics and prerequisite knowledge required for all 56 of the free response exam questions since 2013. (This has been updated with the 2019 questions!) I have also included a checklist so that you can keep track of which free response questions your students complete for practice!
These FRQ questions can be located for free on the College Board website. Search “AP Biology College Board Free Response Questions,” to locate a list of documents.
I have my students tackle an FRQ question every week for “FRQ Friday.” I time them, and we grade their work together using the scoring guidelines on the College Board website. I think it is important to have the students grade their own work, so that they understand what the exam readers are looking for.
