Description

Need some great examples of amazing animal senses for an information processing unit covering sensory receptors and how they respond to stimuli? Here are 22 color, image sort, digital or printable cards to match with fascinating description cards for the students to figure out. Did you know that crickets have ears on their knees? Did you know that catfish taste with their skin?

There are 22 images of both vertebrates and invertebrates along with 22 mystery descriptions that the students need to match with the images.

As I prefer to do with most of my products, this resource can be used across quite a few grades. Any one of the images can be well developed into a deeper discussion or even student research. I have included vocabulary in the mystery discussions(echolocation, chemoreceptors, etc. ) that could definitely be explored further.

Included in this resource:

  • Teacher Notes
  • List of Standards Covered
  • Answer Sheets of Included Pairs
  • 22 Image Cards
  • 22 Mystery Description Cards for Students to Figure Out

NGSS4-LS1-2
Use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways. Emphasis is on systems of information transfer. Assessment does not include the mechanisms by which the brain stores and recalls information or the mechanisms of how sensory receptors function.
NGSSMS-LS1-8
Gather and synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories. Assessment does not include mechanisms for the transmission of this information.
