Description

The Essential Question for students during this unit is: How did the LGBTQ community creatively respond to the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s, and protest government inaction in addressing the epidemic? First, students will share what they already know about AIDS - do a KWL chart if you are familiar. Review the Overview slide with students to provide background information and front load before beginning videos and activities.

Students will watch a video clip and look at documents that explain What is HIV? and How is it Contracted? (video clips and documents also come with discussion questions for students - can be a written or verbal assignment). Next, students will analyze the song I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor - a video clip and questions are again provided. Finally, students will participate in a Gallery Walk viewing art work from the time period and in response to the effects of the epidemic (images are FREE - look for AIDS Epidemic: Artwork for a Gallery Walk).

An extension activity is included on the final slide - Exploring the website poz.com (a publication for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS) and record some of the headlines that you see on the homepage. What are the current topics of concern in the ongoing AIDS crisis of today?
