What educators are saying

This is such a fabulous resource! It has soo much to offer, from pre-reading to the final assessments! I love that there are resources for my lower level learners as well! The pre-reading webquest and the paired texts are AWESOME for building background knowledge!
Very helpful novel study resource! The differentiated options worked well with my students and they found them engaging.

⭐️⭐⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Thank you for a well thought out and engaging novel study. The prereading activities were fun and really gave the students some background on the setting of A Long Walk to Water. This definitely helped them with comprehension. The graphic organizers were purposeful and helped students keep track of what was happening to the characters and the plot throughout the novel. The questions were great for sparking discussion. I loved this resource!" - Delaina, 5th grade teacher.

Questioning is aligned with Common Core Standards. I used this as an independent reading novel for my special education sixth and eighth-grade students, but this book is appropriate for upper elementary to middle school students.

My grade 8 small group and inclusion students read this book independently. However, because their levels are so varied, I needed to have two different versions of A Long Walk to Water materials to assess their comprehension. Reading packets are meant to be taught in tandem. Students should not realize that they have a different packet from their peers. It follows the same questioning; however, some are reworded within the packet and on the assessments so that they can have better success comprehending and answering questions. Assessments are also varied for reading levels. Review games can be played together as there are questions for everyone to answer. The higher-level packet was used with students on a sixth-grade reading level. Struggling learners' packet was used with students at a third-grade reading level.

How to use this novel study in your classroom:

    • Complete this novel study as a whole class activity. Start with the prereading activities, then introduce the novel to your students. Next, you can use either the chapter questions or chapter organizers to help students break down important concepts. Finally, assess students throughout the reading of the novel to gain their understanding.
    • Have students use this novel study in small groups. Students can read the novel together or independently and use the activities in class to assess comprehension.
    • Read the novel together in class and have students work on the various activities at home to assess understanding.
    • Homeschool work assignment
    • Summer school reading project
    • Independent reading study
    • Enrichment

    Summary of the novel:

Salva and Nya have difficult paths to walk in life. Based on a true story, Salva's journey begins in 1985 with an explosion. The boy's small village in Sudan erupts into chaos while the 11-year-old is in school, and the teacher tells the children to run away. Salva leaves his family and all that is familiar and begins to walk. Sometimes he walks alone, and sometimes there are others. They are walking toward a refugee camp in Ethiopia, toward perceived safety. However, the camp provides only temporary shelter from the violent political storm. In 1991-'92, thousands are killed as they try to cross a crocodile-infested river when forced out of the country; Salva survives and gets 1200 boys to safety in Kenya. Nya's life in 2008 revolves around water. She spends eight hours a day walking to and from a pond. In the dry season, her family must uproot themselves and relocate to the dry lake bed, where they dig in the mud until the water eventually trickles out. Nya's narrative frames Salva's journey from Sudan to Ethiopia to Rochester, NY, and, eventually, back to Sudan.

    • Fantastic resource for a wonderful book! So many resources to help teach this book. This helped the students better comprehend this book and write about it. Thank you for a great resource.
    • The teacher sent a book home and told my child to read it. There were no supports. This allowed me to provide scaffolded supports to enable him to complete the assignments she provided independently of me.
    • I love that there was a version for struggling readers and a digital version for my students who use assistive tech. This was accessible to all of my learners. Thank you!
    • I would recommend this bundle to anyone teaching this novel! I used this for a 5th grade GenEd class, and it was great! My students' favorite part: The flipbook in Google Slides!!! Thank you for the wonderful resource!!
    • My students love this book, and this helped me plan for it! Thank you for an engaging, thorough resource!
