A Bug's Life Movie Guide (1998) - Movie Questions with Extra Activities

This computer animated film from Pixar/Disney is about a colony of ants who try and protect themselves and their little island from a group of ruthless grasshoppers. After several costly mistakes, the main character, Flik, takes it upon himself to find warrior bugs that can help protect the ants from the grasshoppers. Flik inadvertently finds a group of circus bugs who are under the assumption that they are being hired to perform for the ants. When the circus ants and Flik realize their misunderstandings, they secretly make a deal to still try and protect the colony while having everyone believe that they are actual warrior bugs.

This particular movie guide is great for your students because it not only gives them questions to answer while watching the movie, but it also includes extra activities to have them practice their critical thinking skills and self-reflect on various aspects of the movie that can relate to their own lives. Your students will critically analyze topics about leadership, being appreciated, making a difference in the world, and others.

This 1998 animated film is rated G and stars the following actors and actresses as some of the voices of the characters: Dave Foley, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Dennis Leary, Richard Kind, and others. The running time for the film is 1 hour and 35 minutes long.

• 10 Critical Thinking Questions – These are questions for students to answer after having watched the movie. They are to be completed individually in about 2-3 sentences. They are designed to allow the students to practice their critical thinking skills based on various parts of the movie.
• 5 Reflection Questions & 5 Superlative Questions – These reflection & superlative questions are to be answered individually after having watched the movie. They can be answered in about 2-3 sentences but are designed to have students relate various parts or aspects from the movie to their own lives.
• Character Analysis – This activity is to have students analyze various characters in the movie to recount what they liked about them, what their biggest strength was, weakness, etc.
• Art Activity - This activity is to have students try and express some aspect of the movie through the use of art. Students are asked to draw or create something using their imagination and/or the information they obtained by watching the movie.
• Group Activity – This activity is to be completed in a small group and is designed to have students work together as a team in order to complete the instructions or objectives for the activity. Once finished, the groups can share their work with the rest of the class if the teacher wants them to.

All the questions are available in a PDF format for quick and easy printing as well as in a Word format in case you would like to modify some of the questions to the specific needs of your class. A Teacher Answer Key is available for the 20 short answer questions and I have also included a document with instructions and recommendations for using this movie guide in your classes.
