Description

Dear fellow educators,

Thank you so much for downloading my resource. I made this resource to use with my K-2 special ed class, social emotional class. “A Bad Case of Stripes” is a wonderful story that teaches our students that they shouldn’t be afraid to be who they are, and should be proud of who they are and what they like, even if it is different from what others like.

You can both read the book with your students or find the version on YouTube to be read to them. I often find that in special ed that students attention is held better when you have an animated story in a video format than when you read a story. However, I always teach my students to listen to a teacher read story also.

Following is a suggested lesson plan for k-2 students:

Day 1: Talk about Character traits, have each student name one character trait of their own. Listen to story here. After story, A Bad Case of Stripes - Character Traits - fill out with students.

Day 2: Review Character Traits and talk about problem solving. After story: A Bad Case of Stripes - problem/solution with students.

Day 3: Listen to story. Answer questions (field of 2 or 3, depending on abilities).

Day 4: Listen to story . Review character traits again and problem solving.

Day 5: Listen to story. Comprehension quiz.

Followings are suggested arts and craft for k-2 students to go with the story:

Striped self-portrait: Cast student’s shadow on a paper and have them trace their portrait. Students color in stripes on the paper, then cut out their portrait and glue on another piece of paper. Make eyes, nose and mouth, hair and hat to decorate if preferred.

Striped hands: Trace hands. Have students make all kinds of prints and patterns and color in multiple colors. Cut out hand and glue on another piece of paper.
