What educators are saying

I love this resource. My students enjoyed this. This definitely fit the bill! Thank you so much! You saved me tons of time!!

Description

8th Grade Math - Representing Proportional Relationships

This is a COMPREHENSIVE unit for teaching students the related 8th Grade COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS. ABSOLUTELY NO PREP REQUIRED, just download and start teaching in minutes.

Students will review key ideas and vocabulary such as:

•Proportion

•Rate of Change

•Proportional Relationships

Students will then be lead through the process of representing proportional relationships with equations by writing them in the form: y = kx. To do this, they must review the concept of Constant of Proportionality. the manner to represent it as: k = y/x

Students will then practice applying the following steps:

  1. Make a table to display the values
  2. Write the rates and determine the Constant of Proportionality
  3. Write an equation for the relationship, but be sure to define all of the variables. Write in the form: y = kx

Students will then work through example problems to take a data set represented in a table and then graph the relationship using the following steps:

  1. Write the data as ordered pairs: (x,y).
  2. Graph the ordered pairs
  3. If the graph is a straight line and passes through the origin, then it is a proportional relationship.

Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving objects has greater speed.
