Description

8th Grade Math - Operations with Scientific Notation Lesson

This is a COMPREHENSIVE unit for teaching students the related 8th Grade COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS. ABSOLUTELY NO PREP REQUIRED, just download and start teaching in minutes. The lesson focuses on teaching scientific notation and standard notation.

Students will be instructed on the appropriate steps to add and subtract expressions written in scientific notation:

  1. When adding or subtracting numbers in scientific notation, their powers of 10 must be equal.
  2. If the powers are not equal, then you must first convert the numbers so that they all have the same power of 10.
  3. Add or subtract the values
  4. Rewrite in correct Scientific Notation

Students will then practice applying these steps to example problems led by the instructor and then review as a class. Students will be lead through examples of how to multiply and divide expressions written in scientific notation.

  1. Multiply or divide the values and then apply properties of exponents to the powers
  2. Simplify
  3. Write in Scientific Notation

Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.
