Students will be introduced to the big ideas in comparing irrational numbers:

  • Any number that can be written on a number line is a Real Number
  • Between any two Real Numbers, there is another real number .
  • To compare and order Real Numbers, we will approximate irrational numbers as decimals and then compare.

Students will then work through a set of example and practice problems where students will compare Real Number Values and Expressions as well as Order them from least to greatest.

For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
