Description

Finding the measure of angles using knowledge of vertical, complementary, and supplementary angles will unlock lockers and reveal codes. Seventh grade geometry skills will be required to find the locker where the key card is hidden. This escape room focuses on Common Core standard 7.G.B.5 and offers two levels of difficulty to allow for differentiation or accommodate for time constraints. Please note that some students will be able to complete the easier version of this challenge very quickly (10 minutes), especially if teachers do not require students to document their work. The entire breakout process is fully automated by a Google Form™ (does not require Google Drive™ or e-mail addresses). Students will only be able to progress through the puzzles as correct answers are entered. This product also includes directions for use both in the classroom or for distance learning.

Digital breakouts are a great way to review concepts before testing, provide extra practice on a skill, encourage cooperative learning, and to have fun with math. Teachers can choose to use the easier version of this escape room for a quick review activity, while saving the more challenging version for enrichment.

What do students need to know in order to complete the puzzles?

  • Understand angle relationships including how vertical, complementary, and supplementary angles are related to each other.
  • Figure out the measure of unknown angles using facts about vertical, complementary, and supplementary angles.
  • In the easier version, students create and solve single-step algebraic equations to solve for an unknown and find missing angle measures.
  • The more challenging version requires students to create and solve both one and two-step algebraic equations to solve for an unknown and find missing angle measures.
  • Careful reading and critical thinking skills will be required to solve the puzzles.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the easier challenge puzzles very quickly (10-20 minutes), others will take longer. The more challenging version of this breakout should be completed in 20-45 minutes.The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this activity be used for distance learning? Yes! There are directions in the PDF to make this accessible for distance learning. In lieu of having students show you the final page to show that they have escaped, they can screenshot the page. Directions are also included for how to create a copy of the form to view student results.
