Students will actively participate in hands-on experiments and activities that make learning exciting and memorable. This unit promotes independent learning and encourages students to reflect on their understanding, helping them build a solid foundation of knowledge in a fun and stimulating environment.

WHAT'S COVERED?

In this unit, we look at the following topics:

  • Lesson 1 - What makes something alive?
  • Lesson 2 - How do organisms obtain energy?
  • Lesson 3 - How do organisms use energy?
  • Lesson 4 -How do plants obtain energy?
  • Lesson 5 - What do plants need to grow?
  • Lesson 6 - What is an ecosystem?
  • Lesson 7 -How do organisms interact in an ecosystem?
  • Lesson 8 - How does energy flow between organisms?
  • Lesson 9 - How does energy and matter move through a food web?
  • Lesson 10 - How does population affect a food web?
  • Lesson 11 - Why are decomposers important?
  • Lesson 12 - How does matter cycle in an ecosystem?
  • Lesson 13 - What disrupts an ecosystem?

Engineering and Design (NGSS) : “Mars Biodome” Project

See video intro here----> VIDEO

In this end-of-unit project, the children will utilize their knowledge of energy and matter in ecosystems on a collaborative engineering task. They will embark on an engaging and interactive scientific adventure, where they will take on the role of ecosystem designers. They will be tasked with creating a biome of their choice, complete with a diverse and thriving ecosystem. Throughout the project, students will use their knowledge of energy and matter in ecosystems, as well as design principles, to guide them in building a model of their biome. The project provides a fun and stimulating learning experience, as well as an opportunity for students to explore their creativity and problem-solving skills.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSS5-LS2-1
Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Emphasis is on the idea that matter that is not food (air, water, decomposed materials in soil) is changed by plants into matter that is food. Examples of systems could include organisms, ecosystems, and the Earth. Assessment does not include molecular explanations.
NGSS5-PS3-1
Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun. Examples of models could include diagrams, and flow charts.
NGSS5-LS1-1
Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. Emphasis is on the idea that plant matter comes mostly from air and water, not from the soil.
