Description
This product entirely in French from Chez Nathalie is a series of plays based on First Nation legends in five provinces (Ojibwe - Ontario, Assiniboine - Saskatchewan, Mandan - Manitoba, Algonquin - Quebec, Squamish - British Columbia). Each legend includes a text which explains terms (Assiniboine: Saskatoon berry, travois; Squamish: potlatch), the origin of natural phenomena (Ojibwe: North America) or beliefs (Mandan: spirits; Algonquin: animals). Each legend is also followed by a summary of two other legends on the same theme as well as additional activities. The titles and basic plot lines are the following:
La naissance du monde: Animals make a spongy cushion on a turtle’s shell to break Fée Blanche’s fall, which sets in motion the creation of North America.
Les sept frères des pléiades: Seven brothers lead a miserable life without their parents on the Saskatchewan plains. One day, they decide to transform themselves into stars.
Les autres hommes: Seul-Homme is the sole survivor of a flood. He visits the Mandan on the other side of the mountain to tell them how to avoid the same fate. The Mandan prepare an offering.
Les castors et le grand feu: The Creator, who initially forgets to give tails to animals, offers the beavers a long, bushy, shiny tail. However, the tail changes after they fight a large forest fire.
Le rocher Siwash: Pied Agile purifies his body in the ocean in order to provide a life of purity to his child on the verge of being born. During his swim, he meets Sagalie Tyee’s men in a canoe.
