The weeks before winter break and after are very exciting for students as they look forward to, and share stories from their winter holiday celebrations. It can be hard to find math resources that are aligned to the standards and also keep students engaged during this exciting time which is why I made these story problems. The word problems in this resource all lend themselves to visual models and are very helpful for teaching other problem-solving strategies such as labelling and finding the unknown.

The word problems in both resources are all about the non-religious traditions at various winter holiday celebrations. Holidays included in the word problems are Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Las Posadas and Chinese New Year. Each story problem includes a brief explanation of the holiday.

These story problems focus on whole number multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems. It also includes multiplicative compare, measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems.

Description of 4th Grade Holiday Math Story Problems:

These story problems focus on whole number multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems. It also includes multiplicative compare, measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems. All three levels are aligned to standards 4.OA.A.2, 4.OA.A.3, 4.OA.B.4, 4.NBT.A.3, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.MD.A.2, 4.MD.A.3.

• One Candy Cane Level: basic problem-solving skills. Mostly single-step word problems with a few two-step problems. Multiplication of four digit by one-digit numbers. Basic story problem structure with result unknown in most problems. Equal groups and multiplicative compare included. All problems can be solved using concrete visual models.
• Two Candy Cane Level: intermediate problem-solving skills. Single and multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structure with start unknown, change unknown and result unknown as well as compare problems and missing factor multiplication and multiplicative compare. Bar models, concrete visuals models as well as more abstract models can be used.
• Jingle Bell Level: advanced problem-solving skills. Multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structures with unknown in all places as well as compare problems, most which require bar models to solve. Missing factor and division problems included. Most multi-step problems are two and three-step problems. Challenging multiplicative compare with some large division problems (5.NBT.B.6) Abstract visual models as well as variables should be used to solve these problems.

This resource works great during math centers, independent practice, small groups or even for distance learning!

Description of 4th Grade Holidays Around the World Math Project:

The winter holidays included in this project are Diwali, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Kwanzaa, Christmas and Chinese New Year. While some of these holidays are religious, this project focuses on the non-religious traditions celebrated during each of these holidays. Each holiday includes the following:

• A brief informational reading page that gives a background on the holiday
• A two-page task/related set of story problems related to the holiday traditions/celebrations
• One page of fluency practice related to the holiday

The following topics are covered throughout the project (this guide can help you pick and choose which parts you would like students to work on. For example, you might want some students to only do the fluency pages from each holiday, or you may want some students to only do specific holidays etc.)

• Plan the Trip (4.NBT.B.4)
  • Addition and subtraction of large numbers

• Diwali (4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.MD.A.2)
  • Firework Height: measurement conversion and multiplication and division
  • Days of the Celebration: multiplication fluency with 2-digit by 2-digit and 3-digit by 1-digit numbers.

• Hanukkah (4.OA.A.3, 4.NBT.B.6)
  • Hanukkah Gifts: division practice with 3 and 4-digit dividends and 1-digit divisors, multi-step problems
  • Chocolate Coins: division fluency with one-digit divisors
    

• Las Posadas (4.NBT.A.3, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.MD.A.2)
  • Parade Problems: measurement conversion with large whole numbers (multiplication and division). Multi-step problems.
  • Pinata Candy: Rounding whole numbers to the nearest hundred

• Kwanzaa (4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.NF.C.7)
  • African Flags: multiplication and division of large whole numbers
  • Kwanzaa Principles: fluency with multi-step expressions involving all four operations

• Chinese New Year (4.OA.A.3, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6)
  • Dragon Dances: Whole-number division with remainders
  • Red Envelopes: Whole number multiplication fluency practice
