Description

Need an engaging way to discuss rights and responsibilities with students that is applicable and connects to their everyday lives? Then this might be the product for you!

Students will begin be identifying issues effecting their communities and narrowing down a new "rule" or "law" that they'd like to see get enacted. Students will have to analyze their issue and interview individuals that are effected by the issue, organizing reasons "for" and "against" the new bill. The activity culminates in students writing a persuasive bill using two core democratic values as evidence for their bill. Once your whole class has drafted plenty of bills, the possibilities are endless! Follow the provided slides to have students break into committees, discuss, and vote on bills. How far you want to go is up to you!

This file includes:

  • Student Work Packet (and editable Google Doc for your convenience)
  • Teacher Example
  • Teacher Google Slides to Guide Voting Process w/ Instructions
  • Sheets for Introducing and Reporting/Voting on Bills

This multi-day activity aligns nicely with 4th Grade MC3 Curriculum Unit 6: Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship and follows the C3 framework. This also works nicely with the "Persuasive Essay" MAISA Writing Unit for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade.
