Description

This comprehensive unit introduces students to wave energy in the form of light and sound. The unit begins with lessons relating to waves. Many hands on opportunities help students develop a strong understanding of necessary concepts.

This unit was designed to address several standards in the NGSS fourth grade curriculum: 4-PS3-2, 4-PS4-1, 4-PS4-2, and 4-LS1-2.

This unit is appropriate for grades 3-5

*Good Vibrations: Students make a simple straw oboe to investigate vibrations and sound

*Waves: Students read about waves, study a diagram, and answer questions.

*Making Waves: Student use a jump rope to create waves with specific amplitudes and frequencies.

*What’s That Sound: Students make a simple kazoo and experiment with sound.

*Pan Pipes: Students make Pan Pipes out of straws.

*How Do Our Ears Hear? This informational reading passage, diagram, and questions is designed to explain how our ears process sound.

*Speech Recognition Informational Reading: Students read about how technology helps people recognize voices.

*Mirror Mirror on the Wall: Students investigate reflection of light using a mirror.

*How Does Light Travel? Students discover which materials are opaque, translucent, and transparent.

*Light Moves: Students investigate how light appears to bend as it enters different mediums such as water.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSS4-PS4-2
Develop a model to describe that light reflecting from objects and entering the eye allows objects to be seen. Assessment does not include knowledge of specific colors reflected and seen, the cellular mechanisms of vision, or how the retina works.
NGSS4-LS1-2
Use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways. Emphasis is on systems of information transfer. Assessment does not include the mechanisms by which the brain stores and recalls information or the mechanisms of how sensory receptors function.
NGSS4-PS4-1
Develop a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move. Examples of models could include diagrams, analogies, and physical models using wire to illustrate wavelength and amplitude of waves. Assessment does not include interference effects, electromagnetic waves, non-periodic waves, or quantitative models of amplitude and wavelength.
NGSS4-PS4-3
Generate and compare multiple solutions that use patterns to transfer information. Examples of solutions could include drums sending coded information through sound waves, using a grid of 1’s and 0’s representing black and white to send information about a picture, and using Morse code to send text.
