Fourth grade ELA Reading lesson plans and activities for the entire month of February! Included are book units for Wilma Unlimited, Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges, Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, and Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson. This product can be used as a supplemental 4th grade reading curriculum for reading, writing, grammar, and vocab. Celebrate black history month and promote kindness, without taking away from the rigorous 4th grade standards! This product includes lesson plans that are both CCSS and TEKS aligned.

These daily 4th grade reading lessons for February include the use of mentor texts and interactive read alouds to teach grammar, vocabulary, and reading, and writing skills in the upper elementary classroom. Follow my store for updates for 4th grade reading and writing coming in March!

The benefits of interactive read alouds are immense, even in the upper elementary grades. Using mentor texts to teach reading skills is so important to develop comprehension in fourth grade. For this reason, I've created these lessons to be centered around each of the books. There is one mentor text assigned for each week. This book will be revisited several times throughout the week to develop reading skills and strategies.

You will need the following books to use with this product:

Wilma Unlimited by Kathleen Krull

Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges

Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson

Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport

This product also includes 4th grade level NONFICTION PASSAGES to pair with each book to help students practice skills using informational texts.

These lessons and activities are focused around the following reading skills:

Multiple Accounts of the Same Event

Firsthand and Secondhand Accounts

Inferences

Character Feelings

Main Idea

Theme

Compare & Contrast

Integrating Information

Theme vs. Main Idea

The GRAMMAR focus for February is sentence structure.

  • Week 1 - Sentences vs Fragments & Clauses
  • Week 2 - Compound Sentences - Coordinating Conjunctions
  • Week 3 - Complex Sentences - Subordinating Conjunctions
  • Week 4 - Fragments, Run-Ons, and Sentences

These resources are purposefully aligned to both TEKS and Common Core standards.

The benefits of interactive read alouds are immense, and they extend far beyond K-2! If you are not already, consider incorporating read alouds into your upper elementary ELAR block. The importance of having the reading process modeled is significant for both younger and older students alike.

Benefits of Interactive Read-Aloud

  • Teacher models fluency
  • Develops vocabulary
  • Promotes classroom community
  • Collaborate and practice comprehension strategies
  • Teacher models higher order thinking and questioning
