What educators are saying

I love using project based learning in class especially for students that are more independent in their learning. This is a valuable resources that have a lot of concepts covered. I’ve used this as extensions for center work as well as end of year projects. Students get very invested.

Description

4th Grade Math Project! Project based learning! Differentiated math project! Learn about geography and countries around the world while solving math problems aligned to the standards! Great for distance learning! Digital version included compatible with Google Drive!

Math Around the World VERSION 1 is a great way to keep your students engaged as they practice and apply their fourth-grade math skills and strategies! This project is a great end-of-the-year cumulative project! It also works well as a back-to-school project for fifth grade students to review fourth grade skills! This project is also great for distance learning and includes a digital version of each level, compatible with Google Drive.

Students can work on it independently or with a partner! Students can work on the entire project, or they can pick their favorite destination and start at that country! Students can do the project in order, or they can do the four stops in any order they would like. You can have students do one country per day, or per week to extend the project even further! This can also be tied to social studies standards for fourth grade, and you can make it into a research project to extend student engagement more!

In this project, students will “travel” to four different countries. In the first part of the project, they will plan their trip and calculate mileage. At each country stop they will learn about local cuisine by solving problems related to a local recipe. Then they will solve engaging math story problems related to real facts, tourist spots and history about each country!

The countries included in this project are Germany, India, Ghana and Peru. Each country includes three pages of story problems (10 total story problems), and the trip planning section also includes 10 story problems. For a total of 15 pages (50 engaging application problems).

This project is differentiated and includes two levels. Both levels are aligned to standards, 4.OA.A.3, 4.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.3, 4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.NF.B.3, 4.NF.B.4, 4.MD.C.5, 4.MD.C.7, 4.MD.A.2 & 4.MD.A.3 Below is a description of each level:

  • Level 1: Mostly single-step story problems. Multiplication of two-digit by two-digit numbers and four-digit (friendly numbers) by one-digit numbers. Multiplicative compare included. Division of three-digit by one-digit numbers. Addition and Subtraction within 100,000, with compare and result unknown problems. Fraction addition and subtraction, with friendly denominators (halves, fourths and eighths). Multiplication of a whole number by a fraction and mixed number. Area/perimeter, measurement conversion and angle measurement included.
  • Level 2: Mostly multi-step story problems with mixed problem structure. . Multiplication of two-digit by two-digit numbers and four-digit by one-digit numbers. Multiplicative compare included. Division of four-digit by one-digit numbers. Addition and Subtraction within 1,000,000, with mixed problem structures. Fraction addition and subtraction with regrouping. Multiplication of a whole number by a fraction and a mixed number. Area/perimeter, measurement conversion and angle measurement included.

The project includes 30 pages of rigorous, real-world math application problems (30 printable pages and 30 digital pages)! A really fun project to get your students engaged in applying the skills they’ve learned in fourth grade math and to help prepare them for fifth grade math!

The project opens as a ZIP file and includes a printable PDF version of each level (with answer key) and a digital version of each level in Power Point form which is compatible with Google Slides/Google Drive.

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement:
An angle that turns through 𝘯 one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of 𝘯 degrees.
Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical problems, e.g., by using an equation with a symbol for the unknown angle measure.
