What is a Webquest for 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade or 4th Grade?

Students will go on a webquest (visit a kid-friendly, informational website) to read nonfiction text and learn about a topic each week. Topics in this bundle are seasonally and holiday themed.

Students will then use different nonfiction reading comprehension graphic organizers to answer questions about the topic.

During each webquest, students will fill out a KWL (know, what to know, what I learned) chart, answer 5 W (who, what, where, when, why) questions about the text, write about the main idea and key details, practice using new vocabulary, and then write a summary about what they have learned.

Conclude each project by allowing students to write a summary about what they have learned about the topic using the key vocabulary you worked on.

Writing about what they are reading is an excellent way for students to show their reading comprehension.

How to Use These Weekly Webquests with Your Students

Assign one webquest per week for students. During the first few weeks, students can complete the assignments as a whole group, in small groups or in partners. As the year progresses, students should be able to independently complete the projects.

What is a Webquest?

A Webquest is when a student uses knowledge learned from articles or websites to practice reading comprehension. Students will use kid-friendly websites to gain knowledge on a topic. Links to all websites required are included in this resource. If students are not able to access them, teachers can print the information instead.

When to Use Webquests and Reading Comprehension Activities

These 40 reading comprehension webquests can be used during writing, reading or science. They are designed for students in second, third and fourth grade.

Who Should Use the YEAR LONG Bundle of Webquests:

• 2nd Grade Students - Will need help at the beginning of the year, and should work with the teacher, partners, small groups or in whole groups. Some passages could be harder than others, so a great way to differentiate is installing a text-to-speech app for difficult words or by reading the passage aloud as a class the first time.
• 3rd Grade Students - Will need some help at the beginning of the year to get used to the formatting, but quickly should be able to do the activities independently.
• 4th Grade Students - Will need help with the first week to set expectations, but then will be able to complete all activities independently.
