Shake things up a bit by introducing topics with sci-fi reader’s theater scripts. Each script leads into discussion and research about the brain & learning, healthy sleep, the mind-body connection, mental illnesses, immortality/ longevity and health decisions, ethics in research, and/or anxiety.
Partner with ELA or science teachers for cross-curricular joint project based learning. Makes for easy, low prep sub plans using the pre-reading material and read through script. Rubric and Jigsaw lesson planning materials included.
MATERIALS included:
The Age of Anxiety – 13 page script, 15 pages of projects and prompts. In the future, children are given an “unworry” drug until age 17. Then they must choose to enter the City, filled with things to worry about or remain Permanently zoned out. Which will Justin choose? Characters: 5 male, 3 female, 7 either plus non-speaking extras. Run time: 22-24 minutes
Come Home from Earth – 11 page script, 16 pages of prompts and projects. Mind/body duality has fascinated mankind from the early Greek philosophers until now. How does the mind differ from the brain? Does it? How far would you go to find out? Characters: 3 male, 1 female, 2 either Run time:25 minutes.
The Knowledge Machine – 15 page script, 21 pages of prompts and projects. What if a machine could “teach” any subject in 10 minutes? What would you choose? Would the convenience outweigh the drawbacks? Explore how the brain learns and the effects of unhealthy sleep habits. Characters: 3 male, 3 female, 3 either plus extras. Run time: 25-28 minutes
The Secret of Immortality – 10 page script, 15 pages of projects and prompts. Earthmen visit a planet where immortality is a given. To what lengths will they go to discover the secret? How do you want to be remembered? Pair this with Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley Characters: 3 male, 2 either. Run time: 18-20 minutes
