Description

Can your third graders use their math skills to free the leprechaun in this exciting St. Patrick's Day digital escape room? Knowledge of perimeter, solving multi-step word problems, rounding, addition and subtraction within 1,000, and finding missing factors and divisors will be essential for rescuing the leprechaun from a student's successful STEM leprechaun trap.

The clues include fun limericks to bring more holiday fun to the activity. Directions for a limerick writing activity are also included for an engaging cross-curricular experience.

This escape room is automated by a Google Form™, making it super simple to implement! A device such as a tablet or laptop will be necessary for students to access the Google Form™ (no e-mail or sign-in required). Once online, the adventure begins as the form only allows students to progress when correct answers are entered. There are no clues to hide! This online breakout can be completed by anyone with a device and an internet connection. Distance/remote learning instructions have also been included.

  • Note from a leprechaun requesting your students' help in rescuing him. The note includes a QR code that can be scanned to access the Google Form.
  • URL to access form, and another link that allows teachers to save a copy of the form to their own drives to edit the form and see student results.

In order to complete the puzzles in this escape room, your students will need to be able to:

  • Find the perimeter of a polygon
  • Solve multi-step word problems using the four operations
  • Add and subtract within 1,000
  • Round to the nearest ten and hundred
  • Multiply a single digit by a multiple of ten
  • Solve simple substitution ciphers (substituting a letter for a number)
  • Find missing factors or divisors (within 100)

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge quickly (30 minutes), but most will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-55 minutes. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this be used for distance learning? Absolutely! The last three pages of the pdf include detailed directions and tips to help you successfully implement this activity for remote learning.
