Description

It’s hard to visualize the shapes inside of 3D solids! This three-part activity keeps students engaged and working with their hands to discover these shapes for themselves! The quiz tells you whether they’re able to “see it” in their mind.

Solids included in this deck of cards are:

  • Cube
  • Cylinder
  • Cone
  • Rectangular Prism
  • Triangular Prism
  • Pyramid
  • Tetrahedron (triangular pyramid)

But each activity can be extended to as many complex solids as the students would like!

This resource has 4 components for students:

  • A Graph Paper Activity: Students wrap physical solids or objects with graph paper, creating a perfect “net”.
  • A Clay Solids Slicing Activity: Students form clay solids and slice them in different ways to discover the shapes inside.
  • A Challenge Activity: Students challenge themselves to find all 11 permutations of the nets of a cube! Then follow this up with putting the nets in some logical order (no wrong answers!)
  • A Quick Quiz: Students end this lesson with a short quiz that lets you know if they need more practice and work with their hands before moving on.

This resource has 2 components for teachers:

  • A Well-Designed Lesson for Independence: Once you gather materials and print directions for students, they should be able to work through this lesson independently from you without the need for a lesson! (ahhh….yes, sit back and soak up the breathing room truly engaged students can create!)
  • A Teacher Guide: Tips and tricks for how to set up the lesson ahead of time and what materials you will need
  • Answer Keys: Answer keys for everything, including the clay slicing activity
  • Unit Project Map: A unit map showing you where this lesson might fit into a larger unit or project.

For example, check out my project Archimedes’ Bathtub which contains this lesson in a FULL UNIT PROJECT integrating the history of Archimedes’ with 3D Geometry.

This resource covers CCSS Math standards 6.G.A4 and 7.G.A3.

Check out this bundle if you’d like to give your students follow-up games to play to enhance their learning and increase the fun factor in your classroom!
