What educators are saying

Used this as guided math practice. I also printed as a booklet and sent home for parents to know how to support their child's learning at home. Excellent resource with lots of good practice for regrouping!
This is a great resource for teaching addition/subtraction. I wish there were more practice pages for students to continue working on this skill.

Description

Before students learn the standard algorithm for addition and subtraction, they need a thorough understanding of what regrouping means. This resource is designed to help build that knowledge and move students toward using the traditional method.

Includes:

  • Addition mini book (8 pages)
  • Subtraction mini book (11 pages)
  • Addition worksheet
  • Subtraction worksheet
  • Answer keys

MINI BOOKS

Two "how-to" mini books walk students through example problems. Each step is clearly explained in both numbers and words.

Starting with a standard (vertically stacked) problem, the books show how to break the number into expanded form and regroup from one column to the next in order to solve. Students will see that this is simply moving a ten or a hundred into another position.

Using this method gives meaning to the words "borrow" or "carry" that many students have been taught by parents.

The mini books (one for addition and one for subtraction) can be used as stand-alone booklet or glued into an interactive notebook as an accordion book.

WORKSHEETS

Two regrouping worksheets with answer keys are also included. These let students practice the strategy shown in the mini books. Boxes are provided for hundreds, tens, and ones to guide students and make sure the numbers are stacked in columns correctly.
