The math word problems include:

- all one-step word problems

- color and black & white printing options

- cover pages for the packet

- solution pages solved four ways: standard algorithm, number-line, base-ten & expanded form

- three templates to choose from (blank, with instructions, & split into fourths to show multiple ways to solve the problem). Each gives the students space to: show all their thinking, write an equation, draw a model, and write the answer in a complete sentence.

- 12 different types of word problems based on common addition and subtraction situations outlined in the Common Core State Standards

- regrouping & without regrouping problems randomized in the packet

- "At a Glance" pages to see all problems, answers & equations at one time (see the preview to read all the word problems)

- Problem Solving Steps page

The way to present or use these word problem pages are up to you.

A few ideas include:

- whole group practice, teacher led

- individual practice at school or at home

- at a math station in a clear pocket (solution page could be on the back if you wanted to included it)

- collaboratively by table group or group; then have students present them whole group, or do a gallery walk to see how they were solved.

This is Common Core Aligned:

CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.A.1

1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

The writing prompts include:

- 12 writing prompts

- alignment/integration of sea/ocean animal used in the word problem

- "At a Glance" pages to see what each writing prompt is and what the aligning math word problem is (See preview to read all the writing prompts)

- writing examples for each prompt included

- color and black & white printing options

- cover pages for the packet

- two templates to choose from (solid lines & primary lines)

A few ideas I had for using the writing prompts include:

- whole group instruction & practice

- additional writing practice at home

- writing packet or individual prompts for ‘early finishers’

- use as a rotation at a writing station

The writing standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.1

Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3

Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

The Know/Wonder half sheets include:

- three templates to choose from

I created the “Know/Wonder” half sheets with the idea in mind that teachers could use them as a morning warmup in a variety of ways:

•Have students start thinking about the animal in the word problem and/or writing prompt for that day

•Use as a quick assessment tool to see what students can write down in a given amount of time on a random topic & to get additional writing information on each student

•Use as a way for students to talk as a whole group on a topic or with a partner or group

•Go over vocabulary that is in the word problem or writing prompt or words that come up in discussion

The 'What I learned' half sheets include:

- one template to choose from

I created the “What I Learned” half sheets with the idea in mind that students could have something to bring home to their family as a prompt to discuss what they learned in class. When teaching, I learned that students enjoy the opportunity to draw and share what they’ve learned.
