This Informative Writing Resource is designed to teach students how to write an informative piece. It explains the concept of informative writing (to inform the reader about one topic with facts and details), outlines the elements is should include: a hook, topic sentence, 3 facts and details, and a conclusion sentence. Additionally, it features 3 mentor texts to support students with their writing. The mentor texts are related to 1st grade science (Butterfly Life Cycle, Frog Life Cycle, and Animal Characteristics: Elephant Trunks).

Examples of observations could include leaves from the same kind of plant are the same shape but can differ in size; and, a particular breed of dog looks like its parents but is not exactly the same. Assessment does not include inheritance or animals that undergo metamorphosis or hybrids.
