Description

This first grade math resource gives students structured practice in solving addition and subtraction word problems. This is a tricky skill because it involves both math and reading comprehension.

Your students will learn to:

  • read and evaluate story problems
  • identify what operation is involved
  • solve using a variety of strategies that represent their thinking

FEATURES:

  • opportunities to use multiple strategies
  • plenty of space to show work
  • easy to read text
  • clear primary fonts
  • uncluttered pages

All of the word problems in this pack involve addition or subtraction within 20.

These include situations of:

  • adding to
  • taking away
  • comparing
  • missing addend
  • more than two addends

These first grade math worksheets present students with word problems in an easy-to-read format. Space is provided to draw a picture or model, use ten frames, use a number line, and write an equation. This allows you to see their use of strategies from the more concrete to the abstract.

❤️ "I love these, they show multiple ways to get the answer, use of different strategies. Great for guided math. LOVE IT" - Buyer

❤️ "I love the multiple strategies on one page, a great way to guide my students into thinking of the best strategy for them to understand word problems." - Candace

WHAT YOU WILL GET

This resource includes 30 worksheets in two formats:

  • full page (1 word problem per page)
  • half page (2 per page)

If you want to use these with older students who are working below grade level, I suggest using the smaller half-page size. They look more "grown up" but still have plenty of space to show work

Digital Activities

This resource also includes digital activities that can be used with TpT's Easel feature. These activities can be assigned in your online learning platform (LMS) for students to complete on any device. The digital worksheets include:

  • embedded audio that reads the word problems aloud
  • moveable manipulatives
  • answer boxes for students to type into

Differentiation

These word problems are written to meet first grade math standards but will work for high-level kindergarteners or second-graders who need remediation. For students who need extra support, I suggest letting them use manipulatives so they can build a model before drawing one on the page.

❤️ "I was looking for something to challenge my Kinders who are above grade level in both reading and math. This fits the bill! Thank you!" - Susan

❤️ "Perfect for 2nd grade intervention work :)" - Kaylen
