This interactive lesson provides an introduction to the mystery genre with a link to a video. Vocabulary is included with additional explanations of the elements of mysteries. In this 6th grade thematic literature unit, the Big Idea is "Responsibility". All text selections (both fiction and nonfiction) will connect back to the theme and the Essential Questions. Teaching the Theme of a Novel
While reading a given novel (we read Johnny Tremain), students will put sticky notes into their novel each time a big topic comes up. Big topics include: war, independence, growing-up, love, hatred, peace, etc. Students then generate theme statements based on the textual evidence from the novel.
