This fun project on consumer topics originally created to be used as a "holiday shopping project". It has now been made generic for any time of the year, but is easily customizable. It is a great way to assess a unit over percent proportions.

Finding Percents Mentally (Guided Notes)
This lesson is meant to be used as guided notes for a whole class. Students start off by learning how to find 10% of a number, and they use this to find 20%, 30%, 40%, and other multiples of 10%. After noticing that 50% is half of a number and 25% is a fourth, they then learn how to find 5% of a number. Estimating with Percents Activity
This is a great activity to practice estimating a percent of a number. There are 24 problems. Cut out each problem and tape it to a student desk. Students move from desk to desk in order to complete each problem. Students have a recording sheet on which to show how they rounded the numbers and to record their estimates. Answer key shows possible ways of rounding.
