Symmetry Activity: Pattern Blocks Partner "Reflection" Task

This activity is geared toward helping students learn to use mathematical language, a key element of the Common Core. In it, they practice using locational words such as “next to” or “under” to describe a shape they have designed out of pattern blocks. The “twist”? The partner has to build the shape based on those verbal directions—but instead of an exact replica—the partner needs to “flip” or “reflect” the image as described by the designer. Perfect for spacial reasoning, reviewing the con

Astronomers Math, Reading, Writing, Science PBL/ Distance Learning

This low-prep, cross-curricular project invites students to step into the shoes of an astronomer! They will research a constellation (reading), draw constellations (math), create a legend for their own constellation (writing), and explore types of waves (science). This project allows students to be creative and apply skills in a real-world context. Included are both paper and digital formats (great for distance learning), as well as teacher models, suggestions for differentiation, and extension

Shapes in the world! Art integration with composing and decomposing 2D shapes

Created by
Hannah D
In this 3-day math lesson, students dive deep into exploring the various ways to make shapes from other shapes. A unifying thread through the days is the search for differing ways to compose and decompose shapes. Students are provided opportunities to decompose shapes into shapes and opportunities to compose shapes into new shapes. Students investigate Paul Klee's use of shapes in his art to scaffold their thinking about how to tell stories with shapes and see shapes in the world around them.
