Writing Hooks - Fishing For A Hook Activity (Smart Notebook Version)
Students have a hard time understanding hooks, and the importance of a good "hook". This engaging lesson will have students literally "fishing for hooks". They will discover the importance of hooks in their persuasive writing. After students learn what a hook is, they will actually fish for hooks in a plastic swimming pool using a fishing pole and magnet. I have created a SMARTboard lesson that introduces students to plagiarism. The lesson covers what plagiarism is, who can commit plagiarism, and even some of the consequences of it. It includes several famous examples of "borrowing work" and has many links to additonal information for discussion. It also include a short quiz.

This smart lesson walks students through what an expository essay is and what makes a great paper! It is an interactive and very engaging lesson that is easy to follow. It is broken down into 4 categories: 1. Strong and personal connection to the prompt. 2. Organization: Introduction, 1st Reason, 2nd Reason, and Conclusion. 3. Accurate use of language and conventions. 4. Descriptive Language: Idioms, Similes, Metaphors, Alliteration, $100 words/RIP words, Ba Da Bings, etc...

Students will use this SMARTboard lesson to revise their expository essay. The pages will help your students add elaboration, voice, support, details, transitions, and fluency to their rough draft. Expository Research 5-Paragraph Essay SMART Response Assessment
After learning the components of a 5-paragraph essay, students can take this as a formative assessment to show the teacher that they are ready to submit their final draft. If students do not do well with it, the teacher can see what they may need to revisit and revise, before students are finished with the final product. Answer Key is embedded in the document.

Expository Research Unit Smart Response Clicker Quiz
This item works with the Smart Response System for Smart Boards and can be used at the end of a research unit.
