I created these maps and questions so that students can recreate the map on the worksheet and then once completed they can use the maps, and some prior knowledge, to answer questions.

In my classroom, I ask my student to use colored pencils and to be careful and detailed when creating their maps. I project a map at the front of the room and then students can use that as a guide to color in their own map. Those who have a hard time seeing the details I invite to come to the front and get a closer look. Students color in their maps at different speeds so the questions are helpful for students who finish quickly and can easily be brought home and finished for homework for students that need some more time.

If I am limited on time, I have been known to project a map and start a conversation with the students and encourage them to use the map to answer questions and make inferences. It is an activity that is accessible to both English language learners and honors students.

I teach high school and it's surprising how many students struggle with basic geography. I feel it is important to continually expose students to different historical maps throughout the school year.
