What educators are saying

I use this resource for my 5th graders to write a works cited for a biography project they do in their homerooms. I love that I can help the classroom teacher and the slides are easy to follow.
I used this with a Learning Strategies class to help support the English teachers with learning about citations and plagiarism. The activity was engaging and went well.

Description

Teach your elementary students about copyright, plagiarism and how to cite their sources with these resources with this lesson designed for 3rd - 5th graders!

What is included:

  • 22 slide PowerPoint introduction
  • Google Slides version of the PowerPoint
  • 3 Review Worksheets
  • 18 practice task cards (comes in a .pdf document and an editable PowerPoint file)
  • Set of editable task cards included. You must have PowerPoint to open and edit the task cards.

The slides introduction teaches students what copyright and plagiarism are and why it is important to give credit for using other’s work and ideas. It reviews the vocabulary terms citation, source, work cited and bibliography. There are two separate slides for the terms works cited and bibliography. You can choose which slide to use. The last 7 slides are examples of how to create a citation for different kinds of sources (book, web site, print encyclopedia, online encyclopedia, magazine, newspaper and online database). The text on these slides can be edited.

The task cards are to review the information that is in the PowerPoint. The questions ask students to identify parts of a citation, identify mistakes or missing information in a citation. There are also a few questions about the importance of citing your sources and why plagiarism is wrong. There is an answer key included.

The task cards can be used in a variety of ways. You can use them as a center activity, a partner activity, in small groups, as a scoot game, whole-class instruction, practice and review or for fast finishers. They can be used in a classroom or a library setting.

The worksheets can be used as a review or assessment to check the student's understanding of the concepts.
