What educators are saying

Word problems are always a struggle to teach. This resource saved me a lot of time when it came to planning how I was going to teach them. Thank you!
We are required to do 2 word problems a month for data collection. This is coming in very handy to use for this purpose.

Description

Teach the variety of word problem types (change, group, and compare) Common Core requires in kindergarten, first, and second grade using these anchor charts, assessments, and math journal prompts. This packet covers the 15 basic addition and subtraction situations kindergarten, first, and second grade students should be able to solve.

The anchor charts are color-coded by the 3 main types (change, compare, and group). Using these has helped my students visualize the problem and has helped keep ME accountable for teaching every type explicitly with a strategy that makes sense. I project them on the smartboard to guide lessons, then post around the room for support.

Each poster features a sample problem and potential strategy. I start lessons by reading the problem, discussing it, then showing the anchor chart to discuss the strategy used and key features of the problem.

For a follow-up activity, students can solve the cut-and-paste story problems in their math journals. Worksheets provide additional practice or serve as assessments.

This packet includes:

15 Story Problem Posters/Anchor Charts

15 Cut & Paste Journal Prompts (12 of the same problem per sheet)

15 Worksheets/Assessments with 4 problems on each
