What educators are saying

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for and did NOT want to reinvent the wheel. It is perfect for small group and individual practice. I appreciate your hard work.
This is a way to support those students that need some extra help with problem solving. It can be a fun partner or group game for review.

    Description

Do your students have difficulty choosing the correct operation when solving word problems? This word problem sort can be used as a math center to provide extra practice with these skills. It includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There are 8 sorts in each file (24 different sorts in all) providing opportunities for growth and differentiation.

During each activity, students cut out and sort word problems by the operation needed to solve them. Then they glue the problems on a T-chart (created on construction paper) and solve each problem.

***Each sort is also sold separately in my store. Each also has a free sample. Click here to see my free samples.***

There are student directions, word problems and an answer key for each one. I have also included teacher directions and suggestions for modifying the activities for different groups.

This could be completed at once using the different sorts as different levels and assigning students a sort based on their needs. I allow about 45 minutes for students to complete one sort.

    What teachers are saying:

    • "These are awesome! My kiddos have really been struggling with identifying how to solve word problems, and these activities have been great for us to use for practice! I love the variety, and I tend to mix and match between all 4 operations. Thank you!" (Katelyn S.)
    • "I love this resource. My students have an especially difficult time with word problems, and I love giving them these short problems to help them distinguish between operations." (Emily H.)
    • "Love this resource! Really helps me collect IEP goal data and demonstrates the students understanding! Thanks!" (Kelsey P.)

Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
