This Guided Notes, Presentation & DBQ, Guided Inquiry worksheets will help students explore and assess the multi-faceted and overlapping causes of World War I. It uses the traditional M-A-N-I-A acronym for Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism, & Assassination as an organizational tool.
Students will also investigate and analyze:
- quotes by key leaders, including the aggressiveness of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the surprising militarism of Winston Churchill,
- statistics that show the military build-up of nations before World War I,
- political cartoons and images from the era,
- a short map activity on the worksheets and a longer map analysis of nationalism and imperialism in the presentation,
- some of the key alliances between major European powers,
- the chronology of events just before the outbreak of war.
The main learning objectives are for students to be able to:
- use the MANIA acronym to identify the five main causes of World War 1
- explain how these forces each contributed to the start of the war
- interpret maps and infographics to understand the causes of WWI
- identify the key figures in or behind the conflict.
The presentation is in Google Slides format and the worksheets are PDFs. Any edits, additions, or enhancements made to a product within the store will be freely updated to all purchasers of the product.
