What educators are saying
Description
I differentiated vocabulary instruction for my students, so I needed word study activities that would work for ANY vocabulary list. The activities also had to be something that students could work on independently while I was meeting with other children during reading or writing workshop time. So I got to work creating fun, engaging activities that would help my students learn their words while also meeting the demands of our state standards.
I put all nine of the activities on a choice menu so my students could take some ownership over the learning, providing me another way to individualize instruction.
Just like the activities in volumes two and three, and four, in this first volume, you’ll find that these activities aren’t like the more traditional fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, matching words to definitions types of activities. They are activities that have been designed to allow for more creativity, more flexibility, and more FUN in your student’s vocabulary learning lives. Plus, these activities are rooted in research-based best practices from educational experts and researchers like Robert Marzano, Susan Winebrenner, Michael Graves, Isabelle Beck, and Kate Kinsella so that you can be sure that your students are maximizing their vocabulary learning as they work on these engaging activities.
If you’re facing a similar situation in your classroom, this just might be the thing you need to refresh your lesson plans and ignite the excitement in your students’ vocabulary learning lives!
Please note, this group of activities is part of a money-saving BUNDLE. You can find it here: Vocabulary Word Study Activities for Any Word List - Grades 4 - 6 BUNDLE

Here’s an overview of what you're getting—you’ll find specific details for each of the activities on subsequent pages.
→ Table of Contents for your convenience.
→ Full-Page Directions for each of the ten activities. These have been written directly to the students to be used independently at centers/stations or to post on a bulletin board. (This comes in handy for substitutes, too!)
→ Choice Menu-allows for students to make choices about which activities they work on to learn their vocabulary words each week. Also a good tool to track completion of menu options depending on how long or how many options you allow students to complete.
→ Rubric-general enough to use for all of the activities, but designed to allow for feedback that is specific enough for students to make improvements on future projects.
→ Map It Out-graphic organizer pages to use for every word. This choice is not included on the menu, since it is something I encourage all students to do for each vocabulary cycle. The organizers are sized so that they can be cut out and placed in a 5 x 7 notecard file, glued into a composition notebook, or left as is on the full page and either stapled, bound, or left loose.
→ Nine Additional Vocabulary Activities that can be used with any of your own vocabulary list (lists are NOT provided in this resource).
→ Formative Assessment-Vocabulary Quick Check— A half-sheet self-rating based formative assessment to use with students midway through the vocabulary learning process. Quick and easy to implement, this tool works to improve student retention and self-monitoring of learning. Using low stakes quizzes before summative assessments is another research-based strategy for you to add to your tool chest.
