Description
Are your students writing essays inspired by Edward R. Murrow's famous radio program, This I Believe? The Prezi and other documents included in this lesson will make the project easier and more meaningful than ever.
The file you will download includes the following:
1. An Eighteen-slide Prezi (Both the Link and the File Itself Are Included) --It begins with a brief explanation of who Edward R. Murrow was and why he started producing his nightly five-minute radio program. Then the Prezi moves on to several examples, providing a short analysis of six essays. The essay concludes with pointers and prompts that will help your students compose their own essays. Your download will include the Prezi file, which can be saved to your computer and used any time.
2. A Guided Notes Page--This editable document helps students stay focused during the Prezi. The bottom of the page includes space for pre-writing or brainstorming. This makes an excellent handout for students who are absent during the Prezi or who need 5O4 or IEP accommodations.
3. An Editable Rubric--This provides a great framework for grading final essays, but it can also be adapted to meet your students' needs.
4. A Teacher Example--Students always benefit from plenty of writing models. I use this one to have students identify different parts of the "This I Believe" essay with brackets and margin notes.
5. Seven Essay Links and a Student Listening Chart--There are thousands of "This I Believe" essays online. I've done the work for you and weeded through them to find seven well-written examples. Your students can listen to the essays and use the included chart to keep track of the core beliefs discussed in each one. This encourages them to listen with purpose.
The "This I Believe" essay doesn't require a thirty page unit, but your students will benefit from understanding the history behind the assignment as well as the guidance this lesson provides.
