    BUNDLE INCLUDES:

    Reading Guides

These reading guides for The Hunger Games are sure to get your students' attention. They are attractively designed using black and white line art so that students can color them in if they would like. They also come in a printable color version. In addition, I added the colorful version in Google Slides! Just share the link with students and go! Text boxes are already inserted.

I also included a folder with the PNGs of each reading guide in case you want to upload into something other than the provided Google Slides.

There are a variety of question types on these guides to get students thinking about the novel. I intentionally selected questions that would force students to use the novel instead of recalling the movie. Vocabulary is also included. These guides took a long time to make, but they were so much fun!

A detailed answer key is provided.

    Supplementary Activities:

The Hunger Games Supplemental Activities gives you 11 additional activities and tasks to add to what you already have for this novel. If you just need something fresh and unique to try with students, this is the pack for you!

Everything is ready to go! Just print and follow instructions. The pages are also attractively designed to catch students' attention. Those tasks with a rubric are included in an editable PowerPoint in case you wish to make changes. Answer keys are provided as well.

    Activities:

Foreshadowing the Reaping - Students analyze diction and foreshadowing in chapter 1 and provide quotes as support.

Limerick Time - students compete in writing the best limericks for secondary characters. This comes with an attractive handout, character titles to post in the room for the competition, and a ballot for voting.

What is the Tone? - Students read quotes from the novel and decide on 3 words that describe the tone and 3 words that do not relate to the tone. An extension activity is also suggested and explained in the teacher instructions.

Peeta Pin - Since the mockingjay pin becomes symbolic of Katniss, students will design a pin for Peeta as well. They will explain their symbols, colors, etc. in a well-developed paragraph. This is self-explanatory on a handout for students.

Say What? - This is a puzzle where students separate the true and false statements about the novel. They then unscramble the true statements to form a sentence. This is challenging and fun!

Character Highlights - this task is a cross between a body biography and a one pager. Instructions are student-friendly and a rubric is included.

Fight or Flight? - Students research flight or fight response and then determine harrowing times in the novel where Katniss chose to fight or flee and the consequences. whether positive or negative, of those actions.

Character Theme Song - Students choose songs for character(s), quote particular lines from songs that relate to the character(s), and explain the relevance.

Tourist Attraction - This has lots of options detailed in the teacher instructions, but the basic gist is that students will design the forest arena with 10 tourist stops that are significant to the 74th Hunger Games. They will cleverly name the stops, explain their significance, and write what the event at that stop reveals about character or theme. The handout explaining this activity is detailed, and it comes in the editable PowerPoint if you wish to make changes to the requirements or rubric.

Dystopian Societies - Students look up characteristics of dystopian societies and decide which ones are evident in The Hunger Games. They must also prove these with examples from the novel.

APP to Aide - Students select a character to sponsor in the Games. They fill out a handout that looks like a cell phone with APPS. They create an APP to help their chosen character after they consider the areas in which the character needs assistance. This handout is self-explanatory and eye-catching.

    Thinking Stations:

The Hunger Games Thinking Stations challenges students to think, discuss, and evaluate character, theme, plot, actions, symbolism, and more as they provide specific evidence and contemplate topics relative to the novel. They have to dig deep because some of the answers cannot be found online if you have some students who want to try and take the easy way out. For instance, there is a station for Haymitch and for Cinna where students have to think carefully to complete the task whereas most information online relates to the main characters.

This is print-and-go! Teachers simply print one copy to post at stations, and students do the rest. YES!

    Figurative Language Sort:

Hands-on Figurative Language Sorts Activity using examples from The Hunger Games.

► 2 pages of instructions for print activity and 2 pages of instructions for digital activity.

►1 title page to be cut in fourths

► 8 pages of figurative examples to be categorized.

    ► Answer key

Once you print and cut the pages in fourths, small groups place the title cards of simile, metaphor, and personification, and none at the top of a desk. Then, they read through the figurative language cards (made from the 9 pages cut in fourths) and sort them according to which title the example falls under.

When students finish categorizing the cards, they must look at the enlarged letter in the top left corner of each card to unscramble a word. The words from each category form a sentence. Thus, students work collaboratively to decide the figurative language contained in each card and then have fun trying to figure out the sentence before any other group. There are lots of forms of figurative language, but this lesson only reviews simile, metaphor, personification, and none.

(None category is for a statement that has a no simile, personification, or metaphor.)

This is a fun, hands-on, engaging review that helps you assess students' knowledge without doing a boring worksheet. This activity should take about 30 minutes (could be longer or shorter depending on ability levels.)

This activity also comes in interactive Google Slides for remote/digital/virtual learners. Students move the cards under the correct category and unscramble the letters to forms words.

    Review Game:

The Hunger Games Review Game has 5 task card and game options with 80 questions about the novel. Each card has an illustration as well to grab the students' attention.

There are options for individual, group, and whole class review with instructions for how to use or play each way. Choose which one best fits your class. Different classes need different things, so you might choose one option for first period and another for second. No problem - it's up to you!

A rule sheet for the first game option is included. Students read it and start playing. Students enjoy the game while you have a break!

    Final Test:

The Hunger Games Test has the following types of questions:

    25 multiple choice

    11 true/false

    3 written paragraph response

    1 essay (2 options)

Each question counts two points each, except for the written response (5 points each) and the essay (13 points).

There are 2 different versions – same test, but the answer choices for the multiple choice and the true/false questions are rearranged so that the answers are all different between the two tests. Cheaters don’t stand a chance!

There is a mix of comprehension and analysis questions.

This test also comes with an editable PowerPoint if you wish to change any questions. If you do not want to have any short answer or essay questions, you can erase those off of the PowerPoint, save as a PDF file, and print.
