Description

If you're teaching The Great Gatsby, you might need some support or new ideas for assessing students. This product includes reading quizzes, socratic seminar discussions, and a final synthesis writing assessment. These quizzes and assessments are COMPLETELY EDITABLE on Google Drive and can be used to supplement your current plans, as homework assignments, or in any other capacity! For these LESSONS IN ACTION, check out my Instagram Highlights! I discuss using many of these lessons and you can see them for yourself!

THIS PRODUCT INCLUDES:

Reading Quizzes

These questions are "sesame street" style and presented on Google Forms. Students receive four items. Then, they must explain HOW three of them are connected and WHY the remaining item does not belong. I've included an answer key and rubric for you to use! Each quiz contains only two questions, but it takes students anywhere from 15-20 minutes to complete the quiz due to the challenge of the questions. Remember, all is editable, so you are welcome to add, change, or delete anything you wish!

Final Assessments

  • Pre-Reading Socratic Seminar Questions, Links, and Rubric: Explore these eight questions with students before you start reading the novel. The packet includes links to articles, political cartoons, and songs that will aid in the exploration of the American Dream and establishing preliminary ideas about the dream before meeting the characters in the novel.
  • Post-Reading Socratic Seminar Questions & Rubric: Explore these eight questions with students after the reading has been completed.
  • Essential Question Synthesis Writing Assignment: In this unit, ask your students, is the American Dream more likely to inspire or destroy us? This essay prompt comes with an organizer to support students as they write about their evidence as well as a terms definition handout.

Rubrics

  • Literary Analysis Rubric Starter Kit ($4.00 value!): This starter kit is available in my store as it's own item, but I've included it here for your use when grading the synthesis writing assignment. Enjoy!

WHY YOU NEED THIS PRODUCT:

First and foremost, this product is 100% editable. Each of the resources is shared with you via Google Drive and you are welcome to make whatever customizations you need to best fit your students.

I've worked hard to make each of these lessons rigorous, engaging, and creative. There are lots of "cute" ideas out there as well as some really tough and challenging ones: I strive to balance these two spectrums. I take literary analysis seriously, but I work hard to create visually appealing and collaborative handouts and lessons to help facilitate critical thinking.
