Description
Unit 1 of the Global History Curriculum (1750-Present) surveys a chain of events beginning with the Age of Enlightenment. Students will examine the ideas of several Enlightenment philosophers and assess how these ideas inspired political revolutions around the world — particularly in France from 1789-1815.
-----
◾ ENLIGHTENMENT AND SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION
Students will analyze the writings of Enlightenment philosophers such as Montesquieu, Locke, Wollstonecraft, and Voltaire.
◾ THE ESTATES SYSTEM, (FRANCE UP TO 1789)
Students will evaluate French society prior to the outbreak of revolution in 1789. Here, they will understand the unfair methods of taxation imposed upon the Third Estate by the absolute monarchs of the ‘old regime’.
◾ THE FRENCH REVOLUTION, (1792-1799)
Students will examine the causes and effects of the Storming of the Bastille, the formation of the National Assembly, and the Tennis Court Oath. From there, students will evaluate whether or not the Reign of Terror under the de-facto rule of Maximilien Robespierre was justified. This section of the unit continues through the rise of Napoleon.
◾ NAPOLEON BONAPARTE (1799-1815)
Students will evaluate the rise of Napoleon as Emperor of the French. They will analyze his foreign and domestic policies and determine whether or not he was a hero or a villain.
◾ HAITI AND LATIN AMERICA
The unit culminates with the spread of the ideals of the French Revolution to Latin America. With the rise of Toussaint L’Ouverture, students will assess the causes and effects of revolution in Haiti and several South American countries.
