Description

Sign language flashcards for 59 common first words in English. Includes instructions for how to teach sign language to children.

Sign Language for Late Talkers:

Children who are late talkers or who have communication problems can benefit from be exposed to alternative means to communicate their wants and needs. Using sign language provides a child an opportunity to let you know what they need, even if their speech isn't able to say those words. This can reduce frustration and improve overall communication.

First Words:

Children who are first learning to speak need to develop their repertoire of "first words". These are words that can be used to communicate a variety of wants and needs. Children need to be able to say the names of common objects (like "cracker" and "dog") but also other functional words, like "more", "help", and "all done".

This sign language pack includes a variety of many different types of words that will help a child establish a robust first vocabulary. With these words, children will be able to begin pairing words to create short phrases, like "eat cracker" and "help open".

Who is it For?

This product is great for anyone working with young children who are struggling to learn to communicate. This includes:

  • Speech-Language Pathologists: Use these cards in therapy to help a child learn to communicate while pairing the signs and pictures with the spoken language
  • Parents: Use these signs and pictures with your late talker to help facilitate language development. Don't worry! Research has shown that using sign language does NOT prevent them from learning to speak. In fact, it can speed up that process for some children!
  • Teachers: Use these signs and pictures in the classroom to communicate better with your struggling communicators. Teach them to peers to help children with emerging language skills as well.
