This is a small group counseling lesson to help students learn about setting SMART goals. This is a a great way to begin any small group that you are running. SMART goals help students focus on the topic of the group, open up about what they want to improve or change, and over time feel a sense of accomplishment for making changes.

With small groups, I typically use an I Do, We Do, You Do format when a topic is being introduced for the first time. This gives me a few minutes to explain the concept and model it, then students can practice and receive feedback as a group, and finally they can practice the new skill as independently as possible.
