What educators are saying

This was an engaging resource for my students! The students enjoyed the activity. I love all of her resources!
Awesome resource, all the prep is done for you. The students will figure out the riddle before they are finished with all the problems. It is important to make sure they record ALL their work!

Description

This "secret message" activity will amuse your students and teach them about plotting points and finding the distance between them on the coordinate plane.

Directions: In each row, determine which pair of coordinates is the farthest distance apart. Plot the points on the coordinate grid to determine the distance between points. Circle the letter next to the set of coordinates with the greatest distance between them. The first one has been completed for you.

At the end, read the message from top to bottom. It reads, "You were careful!" (The other letters spell "Did you plot them?").

A coordinate grid is included with this activity. All four quadrants are used.

And all you have to do is copy it! The prep is all done for you. It's easy to check. Just see if they found the secret message! It's up to you to determine how much work you require your students to show. Use it as group work, homework, enrichment, or extra practice.

Check out the Coordinate Cruise - Distance on the Coordinate Grid activity for even more fun!
You can also get this activity and 12 more in the Secret Message Math Bundle. Check it out! You save over 50% by buying the bundle.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.
