Description
This one is AWESOME!
Explore the fundamentals of experimental design: independent variable, dependent variable, control variables and, articulate the question that will guide the scientific investigation.
Students will arrange variable cards on a shuffleboard and based on their arrangement, formulate a question to investigate the relationship between their independent and dependent variables.
Thirteen experimental scenarios to choose from. No additional materials are required to complete this activity, everything you need is contained in this digital download.
If students choose to plan and execute their experimental design then, of the thirteen scenarios:
- Six may be easily preformed at school using simple materials (balls, elastic bands, sugar, weights, paper, ramps, paper towels.)
- Two involve plant growth and may be performed at school or at home.
- One involves cooking pasta and requires more controlled conditions and specialized equipment (hot plate/stove top, thermometers). Great for a science labs or homeschool environments.
- Four are real-world based scenarios that will be difficult to test but, any attempt at designing and executing these investigations will certainly be an eye-opening learning experience with respect to the difficulties of real-world experimental design!
Included in this resource:
- 1-page teacher notes/instructions (print).
- 2-pages student instructions & record sheet (print).
- 1-page Experimental Variables Shuffleboard (print).
- 13-pages Experimental Variables Cards (print).
- 13-Easel activities; one for each experimental scenario (digital).
There is no fixed answer key with this product as students will determine their own experimental design. Super effective in elementary, middle school and high school science classes with plenty of room for differentiation.
