What educators are saying

This was a great resource that helped my students understand the design processes. We used it for a polar bear habitat STEM activity and students were able to keep their thoughts organized using this worksheet. Thank you!!!

Description

This graphic organizer template allows students to use the Engineering Design Process Steps to design, build, and test solutions to any problem.

The template guides students through the following steps so that they can successfully design a solution to a problem they want to solve.

Engineering Design Process Steps

1. Ask - Define the problem

2. Imagine - Brainstorm ideas

3. Plan - Select a solution and sketch a prototype

4. Create - Build a working model

5. Test - Evaluate and test your model

6. Improve - What did you learn from your prototype? Make improvements.

7. Share - Share your solution with others

I have used this with my students and it really helps to focus students on the process of problem solving and keeps them from getting distracted.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
NGSSMS-ETS1-3
Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
