What educators are saying

These challenges are just difficult and engaging enough to be a challenge. I'm using them as early finishers for my students.
Easy, low prep activity. Students using these have been engaged. These are great for use in between bigger scale projects when you need a little break from the chaos (STEM teachers know).

Description

This pack of 20 S.T.E.A.M. challenges are creative, open-ended tasks that make students think! These are a great way to keep students engaged at the end of the year!

This resource will have students doing activities like...

  • Creating 3D artwork using coordinates
  • Modeling the sun and earth to scale
  • Designing a pool to meet requirements
  • Estimating how many paper towels are left on a roll

...and so much more!

Minimal materials are required. Most tasks require no materials. Some do require everyday items that could be brought in by students or the teacher, or found at home for students working from home.

Two versions are included:

  • Full page versions: You might create booklets for students. Print all the pages, and then staple, bind, or place in a notebook.
  • Task card versions: Print these to save paper. Create centers or have on hand for early finishers to grab!

The challenges are intended for middle schoolers. Most students from around 5th - 9th grade will find them thought-provoking! On average, challenges will take about an hour (some more, some less).

They could be assigned to students to complete collaboratively in class or given independently to do at home. During summer break, the packet of activities could even be sent home to keep math and science fresh and fun for students and families!

The tasks do not have one solution, so an answer key is not provided. In fact, students will likely come up with different solutions, results, and observations for each task, which adds to the engagement.

These lead to great discussions about math and science!
